cannot change settings in webpage

mick crane
ALERT: dopey home user
sorry to be a nuisance
Is current Debian buster, dovecot, roundcube with enigma and managesieve
plugins.
Everything was working nicely 1.3.8 and then something went wrong.
Since installed 1.4-beta. I was a bit confused because I read it that
the "updateto" would update the downloaded 1.4-beta to the configuration
from the previous install but updates instead the previous install.

Anyway it is working now and installation page has the green ticks
except I just get the unhappy document face in the right hand window in
the "settings" tab.
In the "settings/folders" tab all the folders are there but I get the
unhappy document picture if I try to make a new folder.
I can move emails about between folders in "mail".
Likewise the "PGP keys"tab shows the keys I copied there by hand but
there is no information in the right hand window. There is the text
"rapunzel.home refused to connect".
ufw is turned off.

Is this likely an issue with Dovecot or something daft I haven't done in
roundcube configuration ?

Can't see anything in any of the logs I've looked at except enigma log
says:

Also what seems now to be happening is that sending message times out
but if I reboot the server the message is sent.
which is why I sent twice.

what seems to be happening is dovecot is sending the email, however it
does that, (I never had to configure anything there except tell what was
the SMTP server as it just worked, dunno if is sendmail or postfix or
what ).
So seems error is dovecot not telling roundcube message has gone.
I get some problem like this every few years and tend to get another PC
and start from scratch again so I'll probably do that.
Although anybody see if there might be something obvious that would be
nice.
I don't think is because of "testing" OS release although I suppose it
could be.

yes well whatever happens ( roundcube tells postfix to send the mail,
postfix tells roundmail it's delivered, roundcube tells dovecot ?)
there's a breakdown in communication somewhere.

It's got to be over a year since I did this so is likely I used the
default 365 days in mkcert.sh for ssl for dovecot
and that is why bad communication.
Is there some log about this ?
I try make a new one but complains about "unable to find
'distinguished_name' in config"
which I put as the hostname of the machine
